“Buying and selling a house is somewhat like a pregnancy. You begin the process and you’re not sure there is going to be a pregnancy or not but you move forward and wait.
There process was quite lengthy but we had super supporter at our side throughout the process. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. So much prep to do to just get to the MLS. Wow! Clean up outside, wash/paint the inside, major outside acreage work, renovate different areas, and through it all Jen the mighty supporter was there to encourage.
She keep our time line current and checked on us often. We were selling and moving back to the mainland……..the Mothership we called it after our patriarch passed in May 2023. She encouraged us through out the process. Always an encouraging word, or phone call just when it was needed.
I googled this morning if any animal is pregnant for 14 months and there is one the giraffe. Many similarities to our selling period. Ups, downs and a long drop at the end, and it was all worth it. So like the baby giraffe it was all worth it in the end. Wobbly legs,& tired we set out for the mothership on August 8th.

“We are new to Hawaii and weren’t sure what area would be best for us. We originally contacted Jen to see a vacant lot about 45 minutes north of Hilo, it wasn’t what we were looking for, so she showed us several other homes in the area. She asked us about what we wanted from a house and was able to refine the choices. A few days later we decided to look at a few homes 45 minutes south of Hilo; I called Jen and asked if she wanted to make the long drive to show the houses we were interested in and she said, “Absolutely!”
We looked at eight properties over a two-day period. The first seven were nice but not exactly right; the eighth house we saw was spectacular and within our budget. It had just gone on the market that morning and with Jen’s contacts she was able to get us in to see it first. Jim and I looked at each other and at the same time said, we’ll take it.
Jen did a stellar job of writing the contract with a clause that would automatically up the price if they received a higher bid. That day two other people viewed the property and the owners received three offers including ours. Because of her skill in writing the contract we got the house for only $3,000 over the asking price.
She coordinated the sellers, bank and escrow, sent a frequent and clear Timeline for all the paperwork, and was always available by phone when we had a question. The closing was smooth and on time. “After three successful years of running our small farm in Oregon we decided to apply for funding through the Farm Services Agency (branch under the USDA) to purchase a new farm on the Big Island. We did not have an alternative option financially because we spent everything we had starting our business. There are very specific requirements for this type of funding, and although we were confident that we would be approved, we spent almost six months trying to find a Realtor® that would stick with us to help purchase the property.
The Farm Services Agency helps farmers and ranchers, who would not otherwise be approved for funding, grow or expand their operation. Currently, (2023), if barges stopped coming to the Big Island, the people living here would run out of food in just one week! We were able to prove to the USDA that running our farm in Hawaii was a valuable resource because we would be able to provide more local food to the community. However, the application process was extremely abnormal for Realtors®, arduous and tedious. Added to the fact, we were in Oregon, and could not physically go to look at houses.
We connected with three agents before finding Jen. They all ghosted us within a month. After six months of frustration and hardship just trying to find someone who would continue talking to us, Jen was referred to us through a friend. After seeing her website, HomeOnTheHamakua.com, we knew she was the Realtor® for us.
We were leaving our tiny home, (Jen wrote a book called My Year In A Yurt), for our new Hawaii life, and we both had farm and homestead experience. I loved being able to see who she was through her website before calling her. She even offered us white pineapple starts from her own garden before she met us!
If it wasn’t for Jen, we wouldn’t be here on the Big Island now! She drove to multiple locations to do Facetime walk-throughs, connected with our loan officer through the USDA, and advocated for us in a timely and professional manner. Jen McGeehan stuck with us to the end!
