Once in a great moon a person finds themselves in need of help. It’s a hard place to be, especially when family and long time friends can’t come to your aid. My hubby, Pat, and I, found ourselves in this exact position in October.
I was in Texas visiting my sister and extended family. Pat had flown to Oahu for an epidural, a procedure we had hoped would alleviate the life-altering pain he had been in for over ten months. The epi had zero effect so Pat checked himself into Moana Loa Kaiser. He arrived with a backpack but no essentials for a multi-day stay.
By Day 4 he was in desperate need of essentials. We both tried calling the Big Box on-line order and delivery options, which produced nothing. He tried a delivery service…nadda. As I pondered the situation, feeling frustrated and helpless, I wracked my brain to come up with someone I knew who lived on Oahu and was somewhat close to Honolulu. AJ Doerr, an agent for Hawaii Mortgage Experts, came to mind. “Gosh, should I call him? We barely know each other.” (A few months back, AJ had reached out to me via LinkedIn, and we actually met on the shores of Waikiki with his beautiful fiance, Kelly, and their surfing pup, Mylo. Then, enjoyed a really nice, yet casual, pizza dinner before I spent the next two days at a real estate conference.)
I dialed AJ, explained our predicament, and by 8:00 pm that night he had taken our list of minimal items, shopped, then delivered them to the security guard at the hospital. Mission accomplished! What a relief and a blessing. I quickly sent AJ reimbursement through Cash App and continued my vacation while monitoring Pat’s progress. Then, two weeks later, Cash App notified me that the money I had sent was cancelled. That darn AJ refused to accept reimbursement! I was dumbfounded…begging him to please take the money! He held his ground, suggesting we take he and Kelly to a nice dinner when they finally get to our island. “What? No payback?” That seemed impossible to me!
AJ was our angel with skin on…who answered our distress call with no thought of reimbursement. As I share this story, I am quickly reminded that we are never really alone. God had intersected my path with AJ many months earlier because He knew Pat and I would need him in a way neither of us could have imagined! What a gift he was, and is, to us both!
